Gunung leuser jungle trekking

Jungle Trekking

1 to 5 day treks

For anyone looking for a dose of adventure and wild nature. The jungle surrounding Ketambe village and the Alas River is teeming with wild animals and old growth forest. It's the perfect place to spot and observe truly wild orangutans going about their life in the trees. Orangutans local to this area travel through the tree tops in search of their favourite foods, mostly ignoring the people down below. Here, they are never fed or touched, only observed.

The labyrinth of trails has no map, so it's a must to trek with an experienced guide who not only leads you to the camp and hot springs, but has eyes trained to spot all kinds of animals in the canopy and undergrowth.

There is no set route taken every trek. The animals of the jungle move about freely and are rarely found in the same place each day. On your way its possible to visit amazing places such as the river, natural hot springs, the waterfall, the mother tree and the hollow tree. If there's a particular animal you'd love to see, don't forget to mention it and your guide will keep a special eye out.

The most popular length of an orangutan trek is 3 days, as this allows one full day of waking up and going to sleep in the jungle. Prices are very similar between guides and guesthouses in Ketambe so it's best to choose based on reviews or recommendations. Total price will depend on the number of days and people in your group.

Specialised Trips

6 to 10 day treks

For experienced trekkers with above average fitness levels. These trips usually go deeper into the jungle with particular destinations in mind, such as Lake Marpunge and Kapi area. They need to be arranged in advance and require a bigger support crew of knowledgable guides. The price of these treks is higher than the regular jungle trekking option as there's much greater work involved and locals get paid appropriately for this.

Sometimes many days will pass without seeing another human. There are enormously biodiverse plants, flowers and trees from aromatic orchids to giant fungi and the well-known rafflesia. The views and natural scenery is stunning, traversing temperate forest valleys with crystal clear streams and volcanic sulphur rocks with yellow pools. In some areas the monkeys disappear, replaced by bird-song echoing through the trees. Animals on these trips can be more shy, you will be venturing into wild elephant, leopard and tiger territory and creatures will be more wary. But if you are quiet and very lucky you may get the chance to spot something incredible.

Depending on your time available and destination route, you can add on a trip through the closer Ketambe / Gurah jungle area where you will have the best opportunity for wild orangutan treks to see them in their natural habitat.
